Mixed media installation: Series of drawings, mixed media on paper, aluminium pipes, scaffold coupler, clasps,
400 x 250 x 200 cm
Girls with the Plums is a series of mixed media drawings held upright by aluminium pipes and scaffold couplers. The drawings are figurative, populated with scenes of humans, animals, and plums, a fruit dense with Bosnian cultural memory, woven into the landscape, the kitchen, and the fabric of national identity. The scenes resist precise location yet carry unmistakable traces of the Balkans, and more specifically, the artist's childhood.
Across this tender imagery, the work traces a diffuse and systemic violence, one that moves from top down, difficult to name and equally difficult to escape. The industrial hardness of the scaffolding held against the fragility of hand-drawn surfaces makes this tension physical: structure and vulnerability occupy the same space, dependent on one another.
The structural choice is deliberate. The same apparatus that appears throughout the artist's practice as a tool of negotiation here becomes a means of support, holding something precious carefully in place.
