Bite Swallow, Lick Blow, 2024, Hamburge Banhof

Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, 2024
BITE, SWALLOW, LICK, BLOW is a repurposed and re-imported engraved object with a coat of pigment.
The steel pipes, made from discarded scaffolding, originally travelled from Germany to Bosnia, following the common practice of selling outdated construction materials outside EU borders. The artist’s father, a construction worker and retired undocumented (so-called) Gastarbeiter, purchased the pipes. Re-importing them, the artist made the object circle back to its place of origin. She inscribed facial motifs, using the engraving technique that scratches the coat of rust, bringing the parts of the material to its original shiny surface. The engravings allude to mouths, teeth, and tongues, while leaving their semiotic meaning deliberately open to interpretation.
In addition to their aesthetic value, pipes often function as structural elements, providing support for various installations, as shown below for The Builder's Daughter installation.
