Installation View: Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, 2024 und Kleine Humboldt Galerie, ZkU Berlin, 2025
Evacuation Plan is a ready-made installation based on the reenactment of a packing ritual revisited by the artist after a 20 year interval, between her age of 9 to 39. Initially, the act of packing served as an intuitive coping mechanism for a child during the 1992–1995 war in the former Yugoslavia, providing a sense of safety amid instability.
The installation features two distinct backpacks: a children's school bag, gifted by an aunt who was a refugee in Germany at the time and filled with favourite dresses and toys, placed on top of a hiking backpack purchased by the artist while living in Germany, typically used for leisure activities and filled with artworks and personal objects.
The bags contain 70 carefully selected objects, which remain inside and out of view. Viewers can only engage with the inventory through the accompanying list. The installation highlights multiple layers of invisibility, underscoring a persistent but invisible and sometimes incomprehensible threat. It addresses the anticipation of potential disruption and draws familiar recognition of former experiences with our contemporary moment.
