Jelena Fužinato is a visual artist in the fields of drawing and multimedia installations. Her artistic works explore the transformation of spaces, relationships, and emotions. She develops temporary assemblies and immersive environments by working processual and collaboratively. Her artwork can be understood as a byproduct of communication, relationships, and group efforts.
In recent years, Jelena has focused on investigating how laws, rules, and power affect social norms and influence people’s behaviour, knowledge, and skills. She blends existing references with fabricated information to create complex metaphorical narratives where reality and fiction intertwine. Her works and methods often challenge the central narratives and examine the boundary placements of things and beings. Nurturing a layered approach and combining existing references and erroneous information, Fužinato generates new metaphorical fabrications where real and invented are challenging to separate.
Jelena studied at the Academy of Arts Banja Luka and completed her MA in Painting at the University of Arts Belgrade. She also studied Curating, Managing, and Mediating Art at Aalto University, Helsinki (CuMMA). She graduated from the University of Arts Postgraduate Master’s program at the Institute of Art in Context in 2015, where she focused on artistic work with social groups and in cultural institutions. She continued her education in 2016/18 at the KontextSchule, focusing on critical education and discrimination. Jelena has worked as a guest lecturer within various art and educational institutions. In 2021, she won the Kunst am Bau competition of the Zille-Haus in Berlin Mitte and was appointed director of KontextSchule in the same year. She was also awarded the nGbK outreach scholarship in 2022.
